Physical media continues to hold an important place in many Hi-Fi systems, but the way listeners use a CD player has changed. A modern desktop source may need to handle CDs, high-resolution USB audio, headphones, external DACs, and wireless playback—all within the same system.
The new S.M.S.L PL200 MK2 takes this more flexible approach. Rather than simply replacing the original PL200 with higher specifications, the MK2 introduces a different combination of features, including two-way Bluetooth transmission and reception, a dedicated digital transport mode, expanded headphone connectivity, and new CD playback features.
At the same time, the original PL200 and transport-focused PL200T remain distinctly different products.
So what exactly has changed with the PL200 MK2, and which model makes the most sense for different Hi-Fi systems?

What’s New in the S.M.S.L PL200 MK2?
The PL200 MK2 remains an all-in-one desktop CD player, DAC, digital interface and headphone amplifier, but several additions expand the ways it can be used.
Among the most notable changes are:
- Two-way Bluetooth transmission and reception
- Dedicated Transport Mode
- ESS ES9039Q2M DAC architecture
- 4.4mm balanced and 3.5mm single-ended headphone outputs

These changes make the PL200 MK2 more than a straightforward specification update to the PL200. The emphasis is increasingly on system flexibility.
Two-Way Bluetooth: From Receiving to Transmitting
The original PL200 already supports high-resolution Bluetooth reception, including LDAC, aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC.
The PL200 MK2 extends wireless functionality with Bluetooth 5.1 two-way transmission and reception.
That means it can still receive audio wirelessly from a smartphone, tablet or another compatible source, but it can now also act as a Bluetooth transmitter.

The change in DAC architecture should not automatically be interpreted as one chip being universally “better” than the other.

Rather than presenting the ES9039Q2M as a simple performance upgrade, it is more accurate to view it as part of the PL200 MK2's revised overall architecture and feature set.

More Flexible Headphone Connectivity
The PL200 MK2 continues to use S.M.S.L's patented PLFC headphone amplifier circuit, but its headphone section is more clearly designed around different headphone loads and connection types.
It provides:

- High Gain: +8dB

The original PL200 is rated at 1000mW × 2 into 32Ω, so the MK2 should not simply be described as having a “more powerful” headphone amplifier.
Instead, its key advantage is the combination of clearly specified output across multiple headphone impedances, two gain settings, and balanced and single-ended headphone connectivity.

Dedicated Transport Mode
One of the more interesting additions to the PL200 MK2 is its dedicated Transport Mode.
According to S.M.S.L, activating this mode shuts down the internal analog circuitry to reduce electromagnetic interference when the unit is being used primarily as a digital source.
Digital audio can then be sent through the PL200 MK2's:

- Coaxial output
This gives owners more flexibility to integrate the PL200 MK2 with an external DAC.

This is an important addition, but it does not make the PL200 MK2 equivalent to the PL200T.

This makes the PL200T particularly relevant for systems that already contain a dedicated DAC and where digital connectivity, clock integration and transport functionality are more important than analog output or headphone amplification.

Which PL Series Model Fits Your System?
The three models are easier to choose between when you start with the rest of your audio system.
Choose the SMSL PL200 if...
You want an established all-in-one CD player with the AK4499EX DAC, analog XLR/RCA outputs, Bluetooth reception, USB audio and a built-in PLFC headphone amplifier.
It remains particularly relevant for listeners who value its AKM-based DAC architecture and do not require the newer wireless transmission or Transport Mode features of the MK2.
Choose the SMSL PL200 MK2 if...
You want the most flexible all-in-one configuration of the three.
The combination of CD playback, ES9039Q2M DAC, USB audio, headphone amplification, 4.4mm and 3.5mm headphone connections, Bluetooth TX/RX, Pre/Line modes and dedicated Transport Mode allows the MK2 to perform several roles within one desktop system.
Choose the SMSL PL200T if...
You already have a DAC and want a more specialized digital source.
Its P.A.S.S. servo system, I²S and AES/EBU outputs, external clock support and dedicated transport architecture make it the more appropriate choice when digital integration is the priority.
Final Thoughts
The S.M.S.L PL200 MK2 is not simply a PL200 with a different DAC chip.
Its most meaningful changes are found in how the unit can be used: two-way Bluetooth, dedicated Transport Mode, expanded headphone connectivity, selectable headphone gain, Pre/Line operation, and new CD playback features all broaden its role within a modern desktop Hi-Fi system.
At the same time, the original PL200 and PL200T continue to serve different priorities. The PL200 retains its AK4499EX-based all-in-one architecture, while the PL200T remains the more specialized option for systems centered around external DACs, advanced digital outputs and external clock integration.
The result is not a simple hierarchy of old, new and better. Instead, the three models offer different approaches to CD playback and digital audio integration.
